Thoughts: Usually, the bodies of the executed were denied burial, but Joseph of Arimathea had received permission from Pilate to take Jesus’ body. Jesus was born in a stable, but he was buried in a tomb which the very rich Joseph of Arimathea had designed for himself.
On what became the first Easter morning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to the tomb. Jesus appeared to them and told them to tell his disciples that he would meet them in Galilee.
So the remaining eleven disciples obediently went to Galilee. One had denied knowing him; all of them had fled from Jesus’ trial and crucifixion, but they went to the designated mountain in Galilee and found Jesus there waiting for them.
Matthew gives the disciples the least time with the risen Jesus, but Jesus gives them what is known as the Great Commission. The disciples are charged with five specific tasks:
