We are excited to announce that Michigan Area Bishop David Alan Bard has appointed Reverend Myra Moreland as pastor of First United Methodist Church of Troy effective July 1, 2022.

Reverend Moreland is currently serving an appointment in the Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church, as the lead pastor for Pegram United Methodist Church.  She is a candidate for Provisional Elder in 2022 in the Michigan Conference. Rev. Moreland is on track to graduate from Vanderbilt Divinity School with a Master of Divinity in May of 2022, completing the three-year program in two years.

As a Licensed Local Pastor in the Michigan Conference, Rev. Moreland served as interim lead pastor (for six months) and associate pastor for more than four years at Royal Oak First United Methodist Church. At Royal Oak, she led Congregational Care, Adult Discipleship, Children, Youth and Family Ministries and Missions. Rev. Moreland also completed three summers of the License Local Pastor Course of Study at Duke Divinity School. She has served on the Greater Detroit District Committee for Church Vibrancy, helping churches renew and restructure to better serve Christ in their communities.  Rev. Moreland brings more than 30 years of business experience to the ministry using her work in restructuring and turn-around as well as her experience in marketing and communications to help struggling churches. She also brings more than 30 years of lay leadership experience at Birmingham First United Methodist Church (Birmingham, Michigan) where she taught 2nd grade Sunday School (for 30 years) and served on a long list of administrative committees.  She also travelled with the Missions Team to Ghana, Africa and began work with women and children, work that continues today. In 2010, she launched the nonprofit, Project Lydia, serving women and families in Malawi, Africa. Project Lydia established an education and support center for women with HIV/AIDS just outside Blantyre, Malawi.

In her business career, Myra Moreland served as the President of Revstone Industries and Revstone Transportation, a large, tier 1 supplier with more than 20 facilities worldwide. Revstone designed and manufactured a variety of transportation components for the automotive and aerospace industries. Myra came to Revstone from Ducker Worldwide.  In her role as managing director, she worked as a consultant and advisor for mergers and acquisitions in the automotive industry; work which included the acquisitions that would become Revstone.  Myra Moreland spent most of her career (1981-2003) as President and CEO of Moreland Communications. What began as a restructuring assignment for a (then) struggling Chrysler Corporation, became a 20+ year relationship that led to key assignments in communications, strategy, quality, and divestitures.

Myra grew up in Nashville, Tennessee where she received a B.A. from Vanderbilt University and moved to the Detroit area in 1979.  In Birmingham, Michigan she raised a family with three children (and now three grandchildren), all still in the Birmingham area.   She has been active in the community and has taken a leadership role in a number of charities.  Myra served on the Board of Directors for the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan and Big Green (a charity bringing food literacy education and the excitement of Learning Gardens to intercity schools across Michigan.)

At Royal Oak First United Methodist Church, the worshipping congregation grew from 250 people in the services per weekend to an average of 450 people per weekend, making it the fastest growing congregation in the Michigan Conference in a four-year period. These numbers were sustained through January, February, and March 2020, when the services moved on-line due to the pandemic.

The Staff Parish Relations Committee is working with our district superintendent, Rev. Dr. Charles S. G. Boayue, Jr., to complete the details of this appointment and will plan to celebrate the ministry of the Verhelst Family before we welcome Reverend Moreland this summer. To God be the glory!
